Become a volunteer at the Hoard Historical Museum and give your free time a noble (and fun) cause! Sign up today—because who wouldn’t want to brag about hanging out with centuries-old artifacts?

Training Required

Friendly, outgoing people needed to welcome visitors to the museum at the main entrance and introduce them to what they can see and do here. Assist with clerical, tasks at the greeter desk as needed. Regular shifts run Tuesday through Saturdays from 9:30am to 1:00pm and from 1:00pm to 4:30pm. Occasionally evening or Saturday Shifts needed sure to program needs.

Time Commitment: At least one 3.5 shift per month

Training Required 

Do you like reading about historical events in a quiet setting? The Archive Assistant job is helping with historical research as directed by staff. This involves reading newspapers and other documents. Duties also include greeting visitors to the library and helping researchers’ access archival reference materials. Archive Assistants are stationed at the desk of the Knox Research Library & Archive on Tuesdays through Saturdays. There are two shifts per day: 10:00am to 1:00pm and 1:00pm to 4:00pm.

Time Commitment: At least on 3 hours shift per month 

Additional Archive Assistant Help

Oral History Transcribers (Training Required) : Are you interested in local stories? transcribing recorded stories make the information easier to locate and assemble for museum use in media presentations, exhibits and research publications. Need good listening & typing skills.

Bakers: Some of our receptions and events feature yummy homemade cookies and bars. Bake at home and bring them in!

Kitchen/Reception Volunteers: Can you lay out a beautiful spread and keep it stocked? Like to run a super-fast dishwasher? Love to interact with visitors? Help us with our receptions. Volunteers work in teams of 2 or 3 during special events and programs. Time Commitment: 2 to 3 hours per event. 

Event Assistance: Help museum staff before during and after special events. Consider “adopting” an event each year. Events include Mary Hoard Art Show, Dairy Day, 4th of July Ice Cream Social, Holiday Open House program and others as needed. Time Commitment Varies. Do not need to work every event. 

Poster Distribution: Help spread the word about museum events by distributing posters for upcoming events. Walking and driving routes are available, including Fort Atkinson and surrounding communities. Time Commitment: Usually 2 hours a month.

Training Required 

Do you like to play in the dirt? Help keep the museum’s five gardens looking great by adopting a section of a garden and working with a Master Gardener to maintain it on a regular basis. In addition, seasonal help is needed for group garden workdays. Group workdays are usually 2-4 hours in length and may include mulching, prepping beds for spring and winter, etc. Minimal gardening needed. The Museum’s Master Gardeners will be available for direction and support.

Time Commitment: Varies with season and weather. 

Do you like to work alone on “behind the scenes” projects? Computer work, filling shredding, correspondence, and other office jobs are available. Do you prefer to work with a grop of other volunteers? Come join our volunteers at our “Merry Mailers” bulk mailing parties where we prepare to send out newsletters, calendars, invitations, etc.

Time Commitment: Varies. Usually 2 hours per event/shift.
