Date in History: 1922

In June of 1922, the Jefferson County Guernsey Breeder’s Association celebrated their annual picnic at the farm of E. H. Kiesling. Located three miles northwest of Fort Atkinson, the Kiesling’s new modern barn was decorated especially for the event. Over 260 people attended the day long celebration, bringing along a basket dinner to feed their family. After the noon meal, the program began with full agenda of music, recitations and speeches.

To top the day off, races and games were arranged. Enthusiastic boys and girls participated in a variety of races to include the ever popular – sack race. A selection of prizes were donated by local businesses. Baseballs and gloves, flashlights, toilet water and Ever Sharp pencils awaited the lucky winners.

In 1940 Wisconsin Governor Julius P. Heil would officially proclaim June to be Dairy Month.
