Our Origin Story
The Hoard Historical Museum began in 1933 as a project of the Fort Atkinson chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, with the goal of celebrating the city’s centennial. Initially housed in the Dwight Foster Public Library, the growing collection of historic artifacts led to the museum’s official opening in 1936. In 1957, the museum moved to the former home of Luella Hoard, gifted by her family. Over the years, it expanded, including the addition of the National Dairy Shrine in 1980, and now boasts over 20,000 square feet of exhibit space. The museum operates through a partnership between the City of Fort Atkinson, the Fort Atkinson Historical Society, and the National Dairy Shrine, funded by a combination of city support, memberships, and donations.
