Begin your exploration of Fort Atkinson's history at the Hoard Historical Museum and National Dairy Shrine's Visitor Center, where there really is something for everyone's interests. Located in the heart of the Merchants Avenue Historic District, just one mile from the famous Fireside Restaurant and Playhouse, the Hoard Museum is conveniently situated on a corner lot with plenty of side-street parking for tour buses. Self-Guided Tour of the Museum & Dairy Shrine's Visitor Center For those big on history, this self-guided tour experience allows visitors to view the Hoard Museum exhibits on their own. A museum representative will meet your group and provide a brief overview beforehand. Then visitors are free to tour the Hoard House, the Mysteries of the Mounds Gallery & Theater, the Lincoln Era Library and Exhibit, and the National Dairy Shrine's Visitor Center. Don't forget to save time for shopping in the Museum's gift shop! Click on 'Featured Exhibits' on our homepage to see what may be available for viewing in the Jones Family Gallery and the Luella Hoard Gallery. Guided Tour of the Museum & Dairy Shrine's Visitor Center In groups of about 15 each, our volunteer guides will provide a more detailed look at the Museum's offerings. Explore what this area looked like before the Fur Trade Era and learn about what peoples built the various earthen mounds in southern Wisconsin. Discover Capt. Abraham Lincoln's role in the Black Hawk War, hear the story of Wisconsin Governor William Dempster Hoard (1889-1891), who hailed from Fort Atkinson, and enjoy a multimedia show in the National Dairy Shrine's Visitor Center on the past and the future of the dairy industry. Minimum of 15 people. The adjacent Dwight Foster House (built 1841) may be available; please ask when you call or write. The Foster House cannot accommodate wheelchairs.
