Date in History: 1947

During the year, the Daily Jefferson County Union keeps us up to date on bird sightings but in the summer of 1947, the Union reported on a flying object of a different kind. Sightings of flying saucers were news across the nation and Jefferson County was no exception. In July, a farmer reported seeing something hovering over his farm southeast of Lake Koshkonong. He was quoted as saying that they were “flying about as fast as a fish darts through water.” Several individuals in downtown Fort Atkinson also reported a similar phenomena that night. Scientists would later claim that the flying saucers were searchlights reflecting off the clouds.
